SECURE is an innovative
initiative to improve access
to essential antibiotics

  • Antimicrobial resistance (including antibiotic resistance) is one of the top 10 global health threats.

  • In 2019, nearly 1.3 million people died as a result of resistant bacterial infections, more than HIV and malaria. 1 in 5 deaths occurred in children under 5 years old.

SECURE seeks to accelerate access to a portfolio of essential antibiotics, including generic antibiotics that are in short supply or not widely available, as well as newly approved Reserve antibiotics for multi-drug resistant bacterial infections.

With growing antibiotic resistance, many health systems, particularly in low– and middle-income countries, do not have reliable access to effective antibiotics.

Without access to appropriate antibiotics, common infections like pneumonia and abdominal infections can become life–threatening.
