SECURE: Improving access to antibiotics through new economic models

Improving access to antibiotics is critical, especially in low- and middle-income countries where antibiotic shortages are often a huge challenge. Economic and procurement tools have the potential to remove critical barriers for both countries and suppliers. Join us for a dynamic webinar to unpack the findings of pioneering work which models the impact of affordable access on LMICs and incentivizes antibiotic suppliers to enter more markets. SECURE is a joint initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP).

The webinar will feature a presentation on SECURE as well as a panel discussion to discuss how SECURE could work in countries and highlight the impact it could have on access to antibiotics in LMICs.

Alongside other interventions, the analysis on SECURE has explored pooled procurement, stockpiling and catalytic financing support for countries to ensure a consistent and affordable supply of antibiotics to address drug-resistant infections. The goal is to create market efficiencies, predictability of supply and cost savings.

Speakers:

  • Kim Faure, Project Lead for SECURE

  • Alexandra Cameron, Senior Expert in the WHO’s AMR Division

  • Yewande Alimi, AMR and One Health Unit Lead at the Africa CDC

  • Joël Denis, Director General of Canada’s Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force at the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Moderation by Javier Guzman, Director of Global Health Policy at the Centre for Global Development.

9th Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference

The outbreak of COVID-19 has not only revealed Japan’s lag in such areas including R&D of domestic vaccines and medicines, digitalization of its medical systems, and crisis management system itself, but also revealed the vulnerability in the global health system. Developing countries are also confronted with infection controls, which results in virus mutation and spread malaria, tuberculosis, and many other emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases.

Nikkei Inc. has been organizing the annual Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference since 2014, gathering internationally renowned experts in the field; representatives of the private sector, academia and high-ranking government officials responsible for health, both within and outside Japan.

The 9th Conference is to be held on 15th -16th November, discussing how the global health communities should fight against communicable diseases, and how Japan can maximize its contribution. Through Nikkei group’s diverse media network, the concrete and practical action plans that had been proposed from the conference will be disseminated globally.
